What is PVC?
Polyvinyl Chloride, known colloquially as PVC, is the third most widely-produced synthetic plastic polymer in the world. PVC is a plastic which contains hydrogen, carbon and chlorine, and is classified as a thermoplastic resin. This means that they can be softened by heat and formed to many profiles. The key reason for PVC’s popularity is its extreme versatility. It’s both durable and lightweight, and can come in clear or coloured forms.
PVC Compounds
Before PVC can be transformed into products, it has to be combined with special additives – which in turn determine whether the products will be flexible or rigid, what colour they will be, etc. The materials are put into a high-speed mixer. The materials are then compounded through an extruder and is then cut into pellets and made ready for shipping and distribution. PVC compounds are usually supplied in the form of PVC pellets, which can be used in both extrusion and injection moulding processes.
